Twelve to fifteen Moreno/Rangel Interns and Fellows are chosen each legislative session for this exclusive program in Austin, Texas. Students are selected on the basis of their demonstrated potential for leadership and their commitment to community and civic involvement.

Applications for the 2010-2011 Class are due October 22, 2010.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or graduated within the last year from, a two- or four-year accredited institution in the state of Texas. Undergraduates must have completed at least 60 hours. (Recent graduates are also welcome to apply.)

Foundation Board members review and score all applications received. Participants must be at least 21 years of age. Students may receive undergraduate/graduate-level course credit based on their institution's policies and guidelines.

TUITION AND STIPEND POLICIES

As the Moreno/Rangel Program time commitment precludes outside employment, the Mexican American Legislative Leadership Foundation provides some financial support in the form of stipends. Stipends for the 2007-08 program were $1,250 per month, along with a $750 per month salary from the sponsoring Member of the House of Representatives. The House Members' payroll contribution makes students eligible for state employee health insurance.

There is no tuition for the Moreno/Rangel Program; the Foundation relies entirely on private contributions and grants for the funding of its programs. The Foundation’s admissions, programs and stipends are administered on an equal opportunity basis.
